Claimant counts and rates, and claimants by age and duration are derived from Unemployment Claimant Count data produced by ONS, which are a measure of those claiming benefits. This is also a National Statistics publication. The figures are derived from 100% administrative data which are not subject to any sampling errors. Stringent and thorough quality checks are applied to the data to ensure its accuracy and reliability. Note that the claimant rate by duration categories do not use the claimant count total as a denominator. Instead they use the sum of the two sub categories -Claimants for less than 12 months, and Claimants for 12 months or more. This is in order to protect from disclosure of the true counts, and to ensure the sub-categories sum to 100%. Calculating the rates in this way may however reduce accuracy in individual instances. |
