Geographic units Local Authority District (LAD), Government Office Region (GOR), Parliamentary Constituency
Description Children are classified as below the poverty line (before housing costs). There are four dimensions of poverty captured under the Child Poverty Act, each with a target to be met by 2020. They are: a) Relative low income poverty (below 60 per cent median household income) b) Absolute low income poverty (below 60 per cent of median household income held constant at 2010/11 level) c) Persistent low income poverty (below 60 per cent of median household income for three years or longer) d) Material deprivation combined with relative low income (below 70 per cent median household income and suffering from inability to afford essential spending needs. The figures presented in this report use tax credit data to give the percentage of children on low incomes in local authorities, parliamentary constituencies and wards across the UK. They also use regional trends in worklessness to estimate recent changes in the number of children who are in poverty because their parents have lost their jobs, to update the local tax credit data. Children are classified as being in poverty if they live in families in receipt of out of work benefits or in receipt of in-work tax credits where their reported income is less than 60 per cent of median income.

Description Child Tax Credit (CTC) provides support to families for the children (up to the 31 August after their 16th birthdays) and the qualifying young people (for 2005-06, in full-time non-advanced education until their 19th birthdays) for which they are responsible. It is paid in addition to Child Benefit (CB). A family's entitlement to CTC depends on its income.

Description Lone parents receiving Child Tax Credit (CTC). CTC provides support to families for the children (up to the 31 August after their 16th birthdays) and the 'qualifying' young people (for 2005-06, in full-time non-advanced education until their 19th birthdays) for which they are responsible. It is paid in addition to Child Benefit (CB). A family/s entitlement to CTC depends on its income.
Geographic units Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA), Local Authority District (LAD), County/Unitary Authority, Government Office Region (GOR), National
Description The proportion of children experiencing income deprivation. The material well-being index is a comprehensive, non-overlapping count of children living in households in receipt of both in-work and out-of-work means-tested benefits. The numerator is a simple sum of children aged 0-15 living in low-income households while the denominator is total number of children aged 0-15. Thus, the domain score for each LSOA in the CWI is the proportion of its 0-15 year old children who are living in low-income households. The indicators are summed and expressed as a rate of the total child population aged 0-15.
Geographic units Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA), Local Authority District (LAD), County/Unitary Authority
Description Experimental statistics on children in out-of-work benefit households. These figures show the numbers of children living in households where at least one parent or guardian claimed one or more of the following out-of-work benefits: Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support, Incapacity Benefit/Severe Disablement Allowance, or Pension Credit. Data is broken down by main benefit a parent claims.

Description Economic Deprivation Index (EDI) is a deprivation index that has been produced using consistent methodology in order to track Income and Employment deprivation over time. The EDI provides consistent LSOA level scores for the ID Income and ID Employment domains for 2001-2009. In addition a measure of child income deprivation is also included. his release presents the economic deprivation index and the children in income-deprived households index. These indices track levels of economic deprivation from 1999 to 2009 in small areas in England called lower-layer super output areas (LSOAs).
Geographic units Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA), Local Authority District (LAD), County/Unitary Authority
Description Model-based estimates of income for Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs). The estimates have been produced using a modelling methodology that enables survey data to be combined with Census and administrative data. The survey data used within the modelling process was obtained from the 2004/05 Family Resources Survey (FRS). The choice of the FRS enabled each of the four survey variables on income to be modelled. The estimates and confidence intervals produced are values of the average MSOA income for the following four income types: 1) Average weekly household total income (unequivalised). 2) Average weekly household net income (unequivalised). 3) Average weekly household net income before housing costs (equivalised). 4) Average weekly household net income after housing costs (equivalised).
Geographic units Middle Layer Super Output Area (MSOA)
Description Model-based estimates, at a small area level, of the proportion of households in poverty - measured as the proportion of households earning 60% of the median income. These estimates were designed to meet a user requirement, for estimates of the proportion of households in poverty, using a specific poverty measure, at a low level of geography, which are up-to-date, and on boundaries consistent with the 2001 Census. The estimates and associated confidence intervals have been produced using a single measure; the proportion of households whose mean weekly equivalised income is below 60% of the England and Wales. In 2007/08 a households net equivalised income would need to be below ?199 for it to be classified as in poverty.
